Irish Research Ranked Eight in the World

Need for more Collaboration within Ireland, especially with Northern Ireland

A comprehensive international study of higher education research performance has ranked Ireland eight on the impact of our research publications and notes that the volume of research articles and reviews from Irish universities and colleges published in recognised international journals more than doubled in the past decade.

Greater Emphasis on Part-Time Learning Required from Universities, Conference Told

The Chairman of the Higher Education Authority, Michael Kelly, has called on higher education institutions to significantly increase their portfolio of flexible and part-time learning opportunities. He argues that the limited availability of part-time opportunities, particularly at undergraduate level, is a weakness that must be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Mr. Kelly was speaking at the opening of the European University-Business Co-operation Conference in Malahide this morning.

The Irish Universities Association, Dublin Institute of Technology and partners have recently launched, on a national basis, two access routes for students who wish to progress to higher education. The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is targeted at students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds while the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is for students with a disability. The new routes will be of interest not just to students but also to their parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counsellors.

New access project in schools

A new unit that encourages students to explore options in further and higher education is being piloted in schools this Autumn. The unit is for Transition Year students and has been developed through a joint initiative by the HEA and NCCA, with advice from a working group of teachers, guidance counsellors and access officers. Following the pilot phase it is planned that the unit will be made available to all schools.
