The Irish Universities Association, Dublin Institute of Technology and partners have recently launched, on a national basis, two access routes for students who wish to progress to higher education. The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is targeted at students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds while the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is for students with a disability. The new routes will be of interest not just to students but also to their parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counsellors.

New access project in schools

A new unit that encourages students to explore options in further and higher education is being piloted in schools this Autumn. The unit is for Transition Year students and has been developed through a joint initiative by the HEA and NCCA, with advice from a working group of teachers, guidance counsellors and access officers. Following the pilot phase it is planned that the unit will be made available to all schools.

New Initiative to Promote Equality of Access in Schools

This autumn a new curriculum unit encouraging second level students to explore options in further and higher education is being launched nationally.

The unit has been developed through a joint initiative by the HEA and NCCA, with advice from a working group of teachers, guidance counsellors and access officers.
