Undergraduate Skills Funding
The Government allocated funding for 3,900 extra undergraduate places in July 1998 to meet the skills needs of the high technology industry. This was identified by the government’s “Action Plan for Skills”, and the allocation was made available through the Scientific and Technological Education Fund.
The Report of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs recommended the intake of 5,400 additional students in third level education in skills areas of high employment growth, such as engineering, computer hardware and software.
The Second Report of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs recommended increased intake of degree level students in biological and chemical sciences. They recommended a phased approach for providing them.
The Third Report of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs recommended further intake of students in the Information Technology sector.
The Fourth Report of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs has advised that areas of high technology finance will require graduates.

Postgraduate Skills Fun ding
The Graduate Skills Conversion Programme (GSCP) is a joint initiative with the Department of Education and Science and the Higher Education Authority, in response to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills needs, identified by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs and the mid-term evaluation of the ATS programme. It is funded under the National Development Plan.
The aim of the programme is to provide graduates with the opportunity to acquire qualifications for employment in the ICT area. A composite fee applies to all courses under the programme. For 2012-13 the fee is €2,750.
