Erasmus: Sharing the Experience

The Erasmus Programme has been in existence since 1987.  To date nearly 28,000 Irish students have participated in a study visit or placement in one of the other 30 participating countries.

The National Agency in partnership with the Department of Education and Science (DES) wishes to capitalise on this pool of expertise and experience by utilising these graduates to assist and encourage more Irish students to consider undertaking a mobility period particularly those currently in our second-level system

As an initial step, we would like to compile a pilot database of graduates who have been on an Erasmus visit, who would be willing to visit schools on a voluntary basis to speak about their experiences.

In this regard all graduates (including those who graduate in 2010) who have spent a period on an Erasmus study visit or placement are invited to complete the attached form with a view to participating in the project.

The form is attached for completion by graduates.

Lifelong Learning Programme:  Erasmus

The HEA is the National Agency for the EU LifeLong Learning Programme - Erasmus.  Erasmus is the EU’s flagship education and training programme, emphasising student and staff mobility and European co-operation involving higher education institutions and other key players in the knowledge-based economy. It supports the creation of a European Higher Education Area (EHEA) through increased mobility.   Over 1.7 million students have participated so far with a goal of reaching 3 million by 2012. Together with an enriched study experience, Erasmus also provides exposure to different cultures.

The other actions under the Lifelong Learning Programme are Comenius (first and second level education), Leonardo da Vinci (training) and Grundtvig (adult education).  The National Agency for these actions is Léargas.

Erasmus Lecture

The annual Erasmus Lecture was inaugurated in 2008 in an effort to raise awareness of the benefits of spending time studying or working in Europe as part of one's higher education.  The event also prese  nts an opportunity to bring to the fore issues of relevance to higher education.

The 2009 Erasmus Lecture was delivered by Peter Quinn (below), Business Consultant and former President of the  Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) on Wednesday, 21 October 2009 in the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square, Dublin.   The GAA is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

Bologna Process

The European Commission has provided funding for the establishment of National Teams of Bologna Experts who are a resource to the wider higher education community in responding to the challenges of the Process

Learning Outcomes Publication

This summer marks a peak of activity for Irish lecturers revising their courses and programmes to align with the “learning outcomes” approach. Learning outcomes (LOs) describe what students should be able to do at the end of a learning period. To conform to the Bologna Process, there has been an agreement in the Higher Education sector to rewrite all modules and programmes in the form of learning outcomes by 2010. Fortunately, a clear, concise guide to the process is available to lecturers and programme directors.

“Writing and Using Learning Outcomes: A Practical Guide” by Dr Declan Kennedy is a short, clear, readable handbook which introduces teachers to the concept of LOs and how to write them. This publication which is co-funded by the Higher Education Authority is an international bestseller and has already been translated into ten languages. The handbook provides practical advice on:

  • the wording of learning outcomes
  • how to write learning outcomes for programmes as well as individual modules
  • how to link learning outcomes to assessment methods
  • comprehensive examples of learning outcomes from courses with diverse disciplinery backgrounds

NAIRTL, the National Academy for Integrating Research, Teaching and Learning, has supported the implementation of the LOs approach to teaching and learning through a series of national and international workshops accompanying the handbook. This publication is available at a cost of €15 to cover printing and postage.
