European Programmes
The HEA is the National Agency for the EU LifeLong Learning Programme - Erasmus. Erasmus is the EU’s flagship education and training programme, emphasising student and staff mobility and European co-operation involving higher education institutions and other key players in the knowledge-based economy. The other actions under the Lifelong Learning Programme are Comenius (first and second level education), Leonardo da Vinci (training) and Grundtvig (adult education). The National Agency for these actions is Léargas.
Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with Third-Countries. In addition, it contributes to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of Higher education institutions in third countries by increasing mobility between the European Union and these countries.

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education, which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, by enabling students and visiting scholars from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European universities, as well as by encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third-countries.
Erasmus Mundus II - (2009-2013)
The latest phase of Erasmus Mundus covers the period 2009-2013. The programme has a budget of close to €1bn . Just over half of this amount - €470m is being provided for Joint Masters and for the first time PhD programmes (Action 1). For the first time attractive scholarships will be available to European as well as Third Country students. Funding will also be provided in this area for initiatives aimed at boosted the attractiveness of Europe (Action 3) as a destination for graduate studies.
A further €460m is being made available for partnership and scholarship programmes with higher education institutions in targeted third countries (Action 2).
The deadline for Action 1 proposals is 30 April 2009.
