During and After College
Careers
Most higher education colleges provide a careers service to assist students and recent graduates in bridging in the move from education to employment as well as other options. In general, services provided include advice and information on:- different types of jobs and key skills requirements;
- how to choose and plan your career;
- job applications and interviews;
- good practice in job seeking;
- starting your own business;
- internships, work experience and further study.
Further information on careers services are available on each college's website.
In addition to college careers services, there are other sources of careers advice and resources. If you are at school, you can talk to your guidance counsellor. Older potential students can avail of the county-by-county Adult Information Guidance Initiative.
A range of websites will also help you to explore careers and see what kind of qualifications are involved. www.careerdirections.ie, which is run by FÁS, contains information on many different jobs and career paths. Qualifax.ie, the National Learners' Database, has a guidance/careers section. You can also look at gradireland.com.
The HEA produces a publication every year entitled ‘What do Graduates Do?’ It provides an insight into the position of graduates nine months after graduation. The report may be of interest to students and potential students in helping to inform future career choices, and is available here (pdf reader required).
